KBR at it again

08/28/2008. We've told you many times over about the outrageous abuses of KBR -- you can read about it here, here and here. It seems they're at it again, and just when you thought they couldn't get worse, they did. According to the Washington Post, a lawsuit alleges that KBR engineered a human trafficking scheme in which 13 Nepalese men were told they would be working as hotel and kitchen workers in Jordan. Instead, their passports were taken away and they were sent to a military facility in Iraq. On the way, 12 of the 13 men were kidnapped and later executed. It's easy to see the motivation of a company when making a questionable business decision -- the almighty bottom line. But the consistent disgusting behavior of KBR seems to reveal a complete disrespect and disregard of their fellow humans. It's time to put a stop to this. Call for consequences here. . . .

Countdown to 1/20/09: Watch your vote disappear?

08/26/2008. Who has the Bush administration hired to make sure our voting rights aren't violated on Election Day? Meet Hans Von Spakovsky, a key player in the right-wing vote-suppression agenda. When he was supposed to be ensuring the voting rights of minorities as a member of the voting rights section at the Justice Department, Spakovsky instead used his position to promote voter ID laws. When Republican officials were accused of discriminating against Native American voters, he allegedly hindered the investigation. When it came time to interpret the Help America Vote Act, he opted for a policy that would "keep eligible citizens off the voting rolls for typos and other mistakes by election officials." Oh yeah, and he's also a key figure in the congressional investigation of hiring and firing government attorneys on the basis of political affiliation. President Bush and Spakovsky recently gave up their fight to win a seat for him on the Federal Election Commission. Now the administration's Commission on Civil Rights has found a spot for him. His job duties: Determining if election "irregularities" violate our civil rights. When it comes to finding a fox to guard the henhouse, nobody does it quite like the Bush administration. And with the conventions and candidates stealing most of the spotlight these days, things could get worse. Can we get this guy fired before he does any more harm? I honestly don't know. But we can sure as hell try, and at least let them know we're watching. Click here. . . .

Just follow the (oil) money

08/19/2008. When 80% of Americans would rather see our government invest in renewable energy than drill for more oil, you have to ask yourself...Why are we still having this argument? Isn't it pretty obvious that the American people want renewable energy before they want more drilling? Well, energy is a complicated issue, but here's one answer for you: follow the money. In the midst of energy bills and public pressure, how are oil companies spending their billions of dollars in profits? Lobbying. Check out this chart from CNN, which shows the top 10 oil lobbyists and how much they spend buying their access to decision makers. We may not have millions to spend on lobbying, but here's what we do have -- a collective voice with which we can say, "We want clean energy first!" Join with other progressive citizens in speaking up and calling for clean energy solutions before drilling. . . .

What's on your laptop is your business

08/08/2008. The Department of Homeland Security recently gave Customs and Border Patrol the right to search laptops without probable cause at airports along the borders. What does that mean, exactly? It means that Customs and Border Patrol officials can take your laptop, force you to give them your password, search your files and keep your laptop for no reason other than that they might see you as a threat. Security means more than just protection from terrorists and secure borders -- it means that our right to privacy is protected as well. The Center for American Progress is standing up for the privacy of all Americans and telling the Department of Homeland Security: "Hands off my laptop!" Help us join them by clicking here. . . .

Bush, Cheney and AT&T are Listening – and Congress just might protect them

06/25/2008. This past Friday, June 20, the House of Representatives wrote the Administration another blank check: it ignored its 2006 electoral mandate to stand up to the White House’s bullying – instead passing an unconstitutional plan in new FISA legislation that allows the federal government and the telecom companies to wiretap Americans’ phone lines without a warrant. (FISA is the legislation regulating the gathering of foreign intelligence.) More outrageously, it provides highly-profitable, billion-dollar phone companies like AT&T with legal immunity, preventing Americans from suing their phone companies in the courts – even if the phone companies have illegally eavesdropped on them. Are Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and the Senate ready to stand strong and remove this capitulation by Speaker Pelosi and the House to conservatives who would undermine our rights in the name of security, leaving us with neither? Encouragingly, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said he does not support the immunity deal because it prevents a court from reviewing the legality of the warrantless wiretapping program. But it’s not clear if Sen. Reid has enough support for this fight, telling Bloomberg’s Al Hunt this past Friday that "Probably we can't take that out of the bill, but I'm going to try.” Let’s support Sen. Reid and the Senate’s effort to strip telecom immunity from the FISA bill. Sign out Petition to Make the Telecoms Liable for Spying on Americans. . . .

Let's give our troops a safety net, not a band-aid

5/29/2008. There's no greater symbol of security in this country than the home. But everywhere we look, Americans are losing that sense of security, and none faster than the very people who fight for our national security -- our troops and veterans. Military towns face foreclosure rates are 4 times higher than those in civilian towns. Low pay, overseas stints and frequent moves equal low credit scores for military families, making them easy targets for predatory lenders during the subprime mortgage crisis. Now, service men and women are watching their mortgage payments double right before their eyes. The Servicemember's Civil Relief Act was implemented to prevent troops from losing their homes due to nonpayment of mortgages while they were on active duty and for 90 days afterward. But we all know that in this time of economic struggle, 3 months is not long enough for a soldier or sailor to catch up on the staggering payments that await them. At Progressive Future, we believe security means having a safety net, especially for those willing to sacrifice their lives for our freedom and safety. With foreclosures piling up everywhere we turn, 3 months is not enough. Tell your congressperson to extend the Servicemember's Civil Relief Act to 12 months. . . .

Bush in Iraq...Forever?

4/16/2008. It’s outrageous enough that President Bush railroaded the country into the Iraq war. Now, even as he touts a plan to scale back the length of troop deployment — a promise he knows he will never have to keep — behind the scenes he is starting negotiations with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to keep U.S. troops in Iraq long after he leaves office. It's just business as usual for the Bush administration. Bush and his cronies have consistently ignored the Constitution and its checks and balances by waging a secret and illegal "war on terror." They’ve eavesdropped on American citizens and tortured Iraqi detainees. And now, they’re trying to tie the hands of the next President. The Bush Administration's mishandling of the war in Iraq has cost Americans more than we can afford in lives, treasure and security. We can’t let President Bush hijack the next election by committing America to years, even decades, more of the Iraq war after he leaves office. Please join Progressive Future to safeguard our future tax dollars, international security and the sanctity of the constitutional groundwork laid by our founding fathers.
